Granada started its life as a cinema company founded in Dover way back in 1930, sadly demolished in 2014, owned by the Bernstein brothers Sidney & Cecil. This was due to inheriting from their property tycoon fathers estate which contained music halls and the Kinema group of cinemas.

The name Granada came about because Spain had recently been visited by one of the brothers and was so impressed by the Alhambra complex in Granada they then proceeded to develop cinemas with such grandeur of the Alhambra and they became their version of entertainment temples. One of which opened in 1931 and still exists and is largely preserved and now functions as Buzz Bingo in Tooting London.

Granada cinemas also became concert venue’s during the ’40s and ’50s with appearances by the likes of Dusty Springfield, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lee Lewis and the BeeGees were the last in 1968.

During the ’50s Granada grew and diversified into publishing and then into media in the ’80s. By the ’90s it had become Granada Media Group being heavily involved in Broadcasting and Television.

Granada Theatres Ltd had grown to 74 clubs between 1976 and 1991 and was sold in 1991 to Bass to complement their existing 91 clubs making Bass/Gala the largest bingo operator in Britain at that time.
